What Skateboard is right for you ?
Skateboarding can be a lot of fun, but choosing the right skateboard when you’re just starting out can be tricky. Here’s a simple guide to help you pick the best board for you.
1. Choosing the Right Deck
The deck is the flat part of the skateboard you stand on. When choosing the right deck, consider:
- Width: Standard skateboards are usually between 7.5 to 9 inches wide. For beginners, a deck between 7.75” and 8.5” is ideal. Wider decks are more stable, while narrower ones are better for technical tricks.
- Length: Length depends on personal preference. Longer decks provide more stability, while shorter decks are more agile and easier to flip.
- Shape: Most beginners go with a traditional popsicle shape (symmetrical, with a rounded nose and tail). This shape is great for all-around use and tricks. If however you are looking to mainly cruise around then the shaped decks could be a good option.
2. Choosing the Right Trucks
Trucks are the metal parts that attach the wheels to the deck. When selecting the right trucks:
- Width: Make sure your trucks are the right width for your deck. If the trucks are too wide, they’ll feel less stable. Too narrow, and they won’t give you enough control. Variations can be hollow ( lighter ) or inverted kingpin ( less grabby when grinding ) but ultimately if you are starting out then so long as the trucks are the right width and you like how they look then you'll be all good.
3. Choosing the Right Wheels
Wheels will affect how your skateboard rides. Here are a few things to consider when choosing wheels:
- Size: Smaller wheels (50mm-52mm) are best for technical street tricks. Larger wheels (54mm-60mm) are better for cruising and rough terrain because they roll over cracks and bumps more easily.
- Hardness: Wheels come in various hardness levels, usually measured in durometer (A scale). Softer wheels (78A-87A) provide a smoother ride over rough terrain but are slower. Harder wheels (99A-101A) are faster and better for smooth surfaces but less forgiving on rough ground.
- Material: Most skateboard wheels are made from urethane, which provides durability and a smooth ride.
-Width: Wheels with a wider riding surface can offer more stability and grip whereas a smaller riding surface can help with sliding and certain flip tricks. The shape of wheels can also affect the stability and grip with a classic wheel offer an easier flip and a lock in or tablet being more stable against a ledge or coping in certain stalls.
4. Bearings
Bearings are the small metal parts that sit inside the wheels and allow them to spin. They are rated using a number (e.g., ABEC-3, ABEC-7, ABEC-9). The higher the number, the smoother and faster the bearings will be. As a beginner, you don’t need the highest-rated bearings, but something like ABEC-5 or ABEC-7 should be sufficient. As a standard we would recommend Bronson g2 or g3 bearings to cover all grounds.
5. Grip Tape
Grip tape is the rough surface on top of the skateboard deck that helps your shoes grip the board. Make sure the grip tape is applied evenly and without air bubbles. We supply jessups with boards either chosen to be applied by us or yourself but if you are after something a bit lairier then please do shop through the griptapes on the store.
6. Setup vs. Complete Skateboard
- Complete Skateboard: These are pre-assembled skateboards, ready to ride. If you're a beginner, getting a complete skateboard is a good option because you know all the components will work well together.
- Custom Setup: If you feel like building your own skateboard, you can buy the parts separately (deck, trucks, wheels, bearings) and customize your setup to your preferences.
7. Budget
Skateboards can range from £50 to over £200, depending on the brand and quality. For a beginner, you don't need to spend a lot of money. A good quality skateboard can be found in the £80-£120 range.
8. Brand Recommendations for Beginners
